Propecia is the brand name for a medication called Finasteride, which is prescribed to treat male pattern baldness. Finasteride is marketed by Merck under the trademark name Propecia (to treat hair loss), and Proscar (to treat enlarged prostate), and is also available under several generic names.
Physicians initially prescribed finasteride to help treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is also known as enlarged prostate. Finasteride caused side effects such as difficulty urinating, getting up during the night to urinate, hesitation at the start of urination, and decreased urinary flow. One of the unintended, positive side effects of taking Finasteride, however, was the resulting hair growth it caused. Thus, Finasteride started being marketed as Propecia, and prescribed to help treat male-pattern baldness.
Typically, Propecia is prescribed in one milligram dosages to help men who are suffering with hair loss. While Propecia seems like a great idea for many, after numerous studies, Propecia has now been shown to lead to serious side effects, including sexual dysfunction and a potential increase in prostate cancer, as warned by the FDA.
