Pradaxa Side Effects

It is important to note that Pradaxa, which was released in October 2010, has generated more consumer complaints for the FDA’s MedWatch than 98.7% of the other drugs on the market. The main problem is that Pradaxa has too much of an effect on clotting which, in turn, leads to hemorrhages.  In fact, the FDA warned patients to immediately contact a medical expert or health provider if they notice any kind of problem related to bleeding on any level.

FDA Warns of Potential Pradaxa side effects:

  • Unusual bleeding from the gums
  • Frequent nose bleeds
  • Unusually heavy menstrual or vaginal bleeding Severe or uncontrolled bleeding when you cut yourself
  • Urine that is pink or brown in color
  • Red or black (tar-looking) stools
  • Bruises that cannot be explained and which get bigger over time
  • Coughing up blood or blood clots
  • Vomiting blood or other kinds of strange substances

If you take Pradaxa, you need to know the common side effects so you can recognize them immediately if they occur. If you notice any symptoms of bleeding, contact your doctor without delay. Uncontrolled bleeding can lead to death.

The FDA also warns that you may have a higher risk of bleeding if you take Pradaxa and you:

  •  are over 75 years old
  • have kidney problems
  • have stomach or intestine bleeding that is recent or keeps coming back, or you have a stomach ulcer
  • if you take other medicines that increase your risk of bleeding, including:
  • aspirin or aspirin containing products
  • long-term (chronic) use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • warfarin sodium (Coumadin®, Jantoven)
  • a medicine that contains heparin
  • clopidogrel (Plavix®)
  • rasugrel (Effient®)

While bleeding is a well-known complication of blood thinning medications, the FDA is conducting a safety review of Pradaxa, as it wants to know if patients taking Pradaxa have uncontrollable internal bleeding more frequently than would be expected, based on previous studies.

Other side effects of Pradaxa involve stomach upset, including:

  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Heartburn
  • Burning
  • Bloating
