Fresenius GranuFlo

Granfulo is a dry acid product manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care for use in the dialysis process.  It is used in Fresenius’ dialysis clinics, which treat more than a third of dialysis patients in the United States, as well as an estimated 125,000 patients in clinics operated by other dialysis providers in various dialysis clinics throughout the United States.  GranuFlo, according to the Fresenius website, is the most widely prescribed dry acid product in the dialysis industry.

There is an apparent link between using GranuFlo during dialysis and cardiac arrest.  In addition, there are allegations that this link was covered up by Fresenius (who makes GranuFlo), thus resulting in a potential GranuFlo lawsuit.  If you or a loved one has used Granuflo during dialysis, and subsequently had a heart attack, call the GranuFlo lawyers at Kogan & Associates to discuss a potential GranuFlo lawsuit.

When analyzing a potentail GranuFlo lawsuit, it is important to study the link between GranuFlo and alkalosis.  Alkalosis is a condition that is caused by GranuFlo increasing the levels of bicarbonate in a person’s blood.  It is alleged that the  increase in bicarbonate caused by using GranuFlo during the dialysis process makes a dialysis patient upwards of six times more likely to suffer cardiac arrest.  Fresenius (the makers of GranuFlo), were aware of this link, and on November 4, 2011, Fresenius warned doctors who were working at their medical clinics about the increased danger of cardiac arrest after using GranuFlo during dialysis.

Although Frenenius was clearly aware of the increase risk of cardiac arrest after using GranuFlo, it failed to make the public aware (or the non-Fresenius clinics) of this heart attack risk to patients who had dialysis with GranuFlo.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), received a copy of the internal memo.  As reported by the New York Ties, the FDA is now investigating whether Fresenius violated federal regulations.  Clyontact Kogan & Associates immediately if you think this information relates to your potential claim.
