DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System

DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System

The DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System is a type of hip replacement implant that has come under fire lately due to a design failure.  DePuy Orthopedics first introduced this product in July of 2003, and has since issued a recall after a high rate of failure came to light.

The recall issued by DePuy Orthopedics was voluntary and the company states it needs to conduct further monitoring and testing of patients who have received the products.  Based upon a recent study that tracked people who received the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System, it was found that one in eight patients had some type of failure within five years following surgery.  This failure resulted in further surgery to repair the problems.  Since most other types of artificial hips are designed to last at least fifteen years, this is considered to be a high-rate of failure.

Symptoms of defective DePuy hip implants:

People who have received the ASR XL Acetabular hip replacement system commonly have swelling, difficulty walking, and pain.  These symptoms can be indicative of the implant becoming loose or detaching from the repaired area.  These types of symptoms could also indicate a fracture at the point where the implant meets the bone, as the two parts are no longer fused together adequately.

In some cases, the acetabular cup can also become loose.  The acetabulum is the socket located in the upper portion of the hip, where it connects to the pelvic region.  The DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System was designed to replace this socket area with one metal-lined acetabular cup.  If this cup becomes loose, it can dislocate or cause a fracture that will require an additional surgery to repair.

What to do if you have received a defective DePuy hip replacement:

A recall of this nature needs to be taken very seriously.  If you or someone you know has been injured because of the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System, you should seek legal advice to determine if you are entitled to receive compensation.

Because thousands of patients have received these defective implants, this recall is far reaching.  It is very important that anyone affected contact a DePuy hip lawyer as soon as possible to secure their future, and to make sure all future medical expenses are fully covered.
